Hampton Bays Civic Association: If Wishes were Fishes ...

Monday, February 24, 2014 beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a meet and greet then starting at 7:00 p.m. with the meeting. The Hampton Bays Civic Association will hold its monthly meeting at The Southampton Town Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue ... all are welcome.

The subject of this month’s meeting is:
“If Wishes were Fishes...”

That pithy title will take the meeting off-shore as owners of commercial fishing boats will introduce us to their life in the trawlers that play the fishing grounds of Hampton Bays, just outside the Shinnecock Inlet.

For most of us here in Hampton Bays and in the other communities that pepper the shoreline east and west of Hampton Bays the commercial fishing fleet is someplace we take our summer visitors just before lunch on a July Saturday. Or, after a blow, a place we visit sensing the vulnerability of the fleet to the strength of the storm we want to know that we have all weathered this blow together.

Fishermen are not an easy group to meet. The are up-and-at-‘em long before any of us have given a thought to rising. Then, tired, wet, needing a shower after they dock and off-load they are quick for home.

This Monday both groups will break those habits. We hope you will come and join us at the Hampton Bays Civic Association and meet these men who know the sea. They too are confronted with the same modern age, as are we. Come, listen to their song, discover men of our community you may have only read about, those who go down to the sea in ships.

Joining us will be a representative from the Cornell Cooperative Extension National Marine Fishing Education who will present a short film.
