History of the Hot Tub

I was reading an article today about the history of the hot tub written by Cailley Hammel for AQUA Magazine, it was very very interesting, in my opinion.  For instance, did you know that in the 1960’s the Jacuzzi brothers invented the first hot tub when they “harnessed the power” of water in an effort to relieve the arthritis pain of another family member; the birth of hydrotherapy. Roy Jacuzzi went on to develop the first prototype for a portable, self-contained Spa.  It wasn’t until the mid-1990’s that another two brothers created the perfect spa surface material.  The Watkins brothers were responsible for solving the problems associated with the wooden, gunite and acrylic surfaces by using a material usually used in the boating industry.  The Watkins brothers later went on to use synthetic materials for the spa cabinetry in response to the rising cost of Redwood and other forestry products.  Hot Tubs start becoming more eco-friendly.  The Watkins’ company continue with their improvements in design and innovation designing water filtration systems using ozone technology and salt water filtration.  By 2008 they are the industry leaders in energy efficiency.

Hot Tubs and spas have developed, improved and become more accessible over the last 50 years and now come in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials, jet combinations, choice of filtration systems, audio-visual options, etc.  The cost to purchase a hot tub today has also changed, as well as the cost of ownership…both greatly reduced.

One thing is for sure, the hot tub and spa was born out a need to alleviate arthritis pain and improve health, morphed into the a California Flower Child Party station, and is now back to being an essential part of health management and improved quality of life…although we can’t totally ignore that it is still a great place to “gather socially.”

I suggest you take the opportunity to talk with a hot tub professional about how you can get your body into a hot tub sooner rather than later, you will be happier for it.
