What Our Readers' Think: Locals Pan Bid To Rename Route 24

A round-up of readers' comments.

On Thursday, Patch reported that Senator Ken LaValle "Peconic Highway." The following is what readers had to say about the idea.

Feel free to add to the conversation by posting your thoughts in the comment section below.

said, "Don't these elected officials have other, better things to do in Albany then waste our tax dollars (which pay their salaries). There are more important issues to address then re-naming Rt.24 which is also called Nugent Drive! It is not the Gateway to the East End! Wow the things that our elected officials come up with just to get some publicity. Maybe all of you Senator's/Legislator's should get to work and stop wasting your time and our money!"

said, "The renaming of SR24 is GREAT news and long overdue!! This corridor is in fact the northern gateway to the five towns of the east end and should be recognized and improved as such."

wrote, "I agree with Happy and am sure glad that you are not in Albany wasting my money. I have lived here 50 years and think the name should be left as is!"

said, "Could not agree more with: "Don't these elected officials have other, better things to do in Albany ..." (above). How about they keep their eye on the ball? I bet not one family's child ever moved away because Rt. 24 wasn't named "Peconic Highway".

added, "How about lowering the speed limit and enforcing it...too novel an idea?"

said, "The renaming is only the first step in an initiative that is aimed at not only lowering speed limits and installing traffic controls but at a much larger concept. Change the complexion of the corridor to make it not only safe but also attractive to tax rateable development that capitalizes on the regions history and geographical resources."

wrote, "What we think doesn't matter as long as it costs our money and benefits their friends. i.e.the sign maker. I have a better idea lets rename every road after an fallen hero, in case you think fallen hero means superman drunk in the Hamptons, WRONGO. I mean a young person who has been killed or diabled while protecting our freedoms. Make the re-naming mean something."

said, "G.A. changing a name has absolutly nothing to do with attracting business and or cleaning up a blighted area. While I agree that this area could use a face lift I disagree100% about changing the name of the road. As Happy states the time and monies wasted on a name change for a State Road by our government is appauling."

added, "Come on! name it what you want, it will ALWAYS be Flanders road!"

said, "If receiving a new name means the road gets improved, and business(es) will flourish, and the overall 'feel' of the hamlet of Flanders appears more positive then, why not?"

said, "Why don't state senators start spending their time on finding the funds needed to improve the roadway instead of spending their time working to change the name of the road? What they are doing is wasting their (and other people's) time. The legislators' actions seem more akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic."
