UPDATED: West Hampton Dunes Issues Voluntary Evacuation Order; Other Area Village Evacuations Expected Soon

PREVIOUS: The Village of West Hampton Dunes is asking residents to voluntarily evacuate thier homes.

The voluntary evacuation order, issued at 10 a.m., comes as Hurricane Sandy makes her way closer to New York.

Mayor Gary Vegliante said he anticipates that a mandatory evacuation order will be issued sometime Sunday afternoon.

The Town of Southampton issued a similar notice on Saturday night, telling residents to anticipate an evacuation of Dune Road.

The town's notice also urged all residents living in low-lying areas to also begin to make preparations to leave their homes.

Rebecca Molinaro, Westhampton Beach clerk, said she anticipates that areas in Westhampton Beach and Quogue will also be evacuated sometime Sunday afternoon. Molinar said details of the evacuation are currently being worked out in coordination with the Town of Southampton.

A shelter has already opened at the Hampton Bays High School to accommodate residents.
