Weekly Round-up: Village Elections, Heat Wave and New Beach Parking Fees

Top headlines during the week of June 18.

1. 

A new Suffolk County law to impose a $4 parking fee starting at 5 p.m. each night at ,  and County beaches is being met by fierce opposition by members of the East End Supervisors and Mayors Association and local families who had previously enjoyed free nights at the beaches.

Two shining lights in the Westhampton Beach firmament were forever dimmed, as residents lost two beloved community members this week.

Susan O’Rourke, the secretary to the Village of Westhampton Beach zoning board of appeals and the planning board, lost her brave battle with cancer on Tuesday. And on Sunday, Patricia Ann Stinchi, former Westhampton Beach Deputy Clerk and ZBA member, also died after an illness.

The Town of Southampton has scheduled public hearings on the purchase of several pieces of property in Westhampton-Hampton Bays using the town's Community Preservation Fund.

A heat wave hit the area this week, prompting the Town of Southampton to open a cooling center and people flocking to area beaches.

, a retired teacher and , a municipal account with Suffolk County, have won seats on the Westhampton Beach Village Board. Deputy Mayor  lost her bid for reelection.

Birk lost her seat with 188 votes; Palmer received 190 votes and Urban 252 votes.
