Week in Review: Cupsogue Breach Filled; Horror Movie Filming and New Police Chief

Headlines that topped during the week of Nov. 26.

1. Horror Movie Starring Brandi Cyrus Being Shot in Hampton Bays

It's a film that will make you think twice about calling 911, said Dayna Ghiraldi, producer and publicist of a new slasher flick that is being filmed in Hampton Bays.

And what better place, she said, to shoot a horror movie than the dark roads surrounding Hubbard Park, just off Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays.

That is exactly where the production crew of the film Old 37 will be stationed until filming wraps up on Dec. 15, Ghiraldi said.

2. Village: We Need Bigger Dune Road Barricades

Westhampton Beach Village officials agreed last week that barricades didn't prevent people from venturing to Dune Road during and following Hurricane Sandy — and larger barriers may be needed in the future to keep curious homeowners, housesitters and onlookers away in the event of an emergency.

3. DEC: Cupsogue Breach Filled In

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has reported that a 1,500-foot breach caused by Hurricane Sandy atCupsogue Beach has been filled in.

The DEC said that a dredge crew from the Great Lakes Dredging Company has been working since Nov. 17 to fill the gap and are now working to build up the dunes to an elevation of about 9 feet.

4. School Districts Await State Guidance Regarding Make-Up Days

Area school districts announced that they will be using Spring Break vacation days to make up for time lost during Hurricane Sandy. In it will only use the days if snow days are needed and in the use of two Spring Break Days.

5. Town Board Appoints New Police Chief

Tuesday evening's Southampton Town Board agenda included a vote on promoting the captain of the town police department to chief, on a provisional basis.

Captain Robert Pearce has been acting in the capacity of chief since current Chief William Wilson announced Nov. 6 that he would retire. Though Wilson's retirement does not take effect until Dec. 1, he is using vacation time until then.
