With the boating season just around the corner, members of the Shinnecock Coast Guard Station were out training in choppy waters recently, according to the station's Facebook page.

Over the past year, the station has been responsible for several rescues — In September the Coast Guard saved 11 people in two separate incidents; in May, they were called to rescue a sick fisherman; in that same month, they rescued two who were stranded on a floating dock; they stood at the ready during Superstorm Sandy; and in July they responded after two men fell in the water when their jet ski rolled over.

But, perhaps their biggest rescue last year came in August when they were called in to help when 40 people became stranded on a sandbar in Shinnecock Bay. The coast guard was able to pluck one from the water who attempted to swim to shore.
