Modell’s Sponsors Westhampton Beach Student's Backpack Fundraiser

Ariana DeMattei, a 7th grader at Westhampton Beach Middle School, is one step-closer to reaching her goal of filling 150 backpacks with school supplies for area elementary school students in need by September — Modell's Sporting Goods of Riverhead has offered up backpacks and proceeds from sales.

At 3:30 on Friday, Modell's will present DeMattei with 150 string backpacks for her program, called Backpacks for Fellow Students. Also, through May 2 any customer presenting a Teen Weeks coupon, which can be downloaded here, receives 15 percent off with 5 percent of the proceeds from the sale donated to DeMattei's program.

DeMattei will couple the Modell's donations with donations she has already received and will receive at a Spring Splash she is holding in conjunction with HUGS of Westhampton Beach on Sunday at Rogers Beach in Westhampton Beach.

The Splash will run between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. with plunges taking place in increments.

Community members can take the plunge in teams or individually and will be awarded prizes for largest team, best costumes and first team in the water.

Music for the event is also lined up including, a steel drum band, called Steeldrumania. There will also be beverages donated by Hampton Coffee, facepainting and fire trucks for the kids to explore.

For those who agree to take the plunge, there is a $25 participation fee and spectators will be charged $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Those looking to participate can sign up the day of the event.
