Legislator is Investigating Noise Complaints at Meschutt Beach

Neighbor complained that beach bar has turned her world upside-down.

Suffolk County Legis. Jay Schneiderman, I-Montauk, says he is in the process of pulling contracts associated with the Beach Hut at Meschutt Beach in an effort to address complaints of noise and traffic from neighbors.

"The complaints need to at least be vetted and investigated," said Schneiderman. "Every complaint we receive deserves that."

In August, residents Mary Ann Remigio and Jim Dubrowsky, who live near the beach, complained that their quality of life has deteriorated over the past several months.

"The beach hut at Meschutt Beach has turned my world upside-down," said Remigo at the time. "Our quality of life has been compromised."

Remigio says during the summer she has been subjected to music so loud that it can be heard a block away. The beach hut, she said, was a zoo every night, completely packed with people drinking and dancing till 9:30 and 10:00 p.m.

"If everything she said is true," said Schneiderman, "then we really have to sort this out."

Schneiderman said he believes that first of all, the vendor should only have music until 9 p.m., but that is something that should be in the contract along with other restrictions.

"The county's contracts are really specific and while the vendor should be able to make money, they can't turn it into a night club. We have to be a good neighbor."

In response to the complaints, the that only one complaint was received this summer and that a noise wall that was constructed at the vendors expense should have provided a remedy.

That wall, however, has not helped, said Remigio, who has been thinking about creating a petition.

However, Schneiderman says one complaint is enough to investigate further.

"Whether it is one person or 500 people, if the complaint is legitimate, it carries the same weight."

Schneiderman says after he reviews the contract, he will have a meeting with the parks department.

"We have the time now since the season is over," said Schneiderman.
