Hampton Bays Vet Recognized With The French Legion of Honor

Chester Sinclair will receive the award at a ceremony in New York City on Veterans Day.

Hampton Bays veteran Chester Sinclair is set to receive The French Legion of Honor at a ceremony in New York City on Veterans Day.

The Legion of Honor, created by Napoleon in 1802, acknowledges veterans who served in France during war time, were injured during service and received a Purple Heart.

Sinclair, born and raised in Hampton Bays, was drafted into the army during World War II and was assigned to the 90th Infantry Division, 357th Regiment, Co K in George S. Patton's 3rd Army.

According to his daughter, Brendan Berntstein, Sinclair arrived in Normandy France on July 1944 as a Rifleman. He was promoted to Sgt. in the Battle of The Bulge.

Sinclair was injured and was sent to England January 1945, but he returned to the front lines in April 1945.

After hostilities ended, he was assigned to the Military Government in Berlin, Germany and promoted to Staff Sergeant. He received the Marksman Medal, Bronze Star, the European Campaign Medal and a Purple Heart.
