East Quogue Marina to Open; Civic Blasts Town

The Town of Southampton says it will open the marina on May 1.

Al Algieri, of the East Quogue Civic Association, was at Southampton Town Hall last week arguing against the town's plans to open the Weesuck Creek Marina in East Quogue, according to a report on 27east.

27east reported that Algieri argued that lawmakers mislead "community residents about their intentions for the East Quogue marina" after they purchased it in December for $5.4 million from C&C Shorelands, Swan Acres and Coastal Vision in a last-minute deal.

At the time, the civic said it did not want to see any motorcraft traveling in and out of the 12 slips now the the town owns it; however, the volunteer have argued that the site should remain open.

The town has maintained, according to Jennifer Garvey, spokeswoman for the town, that it is opening the marina in May as a source of revenue.

Garvey said the town has offered the 12 shallow slips to anyone who has held a slip at the location previously for $100 per foot.  The remaining slips will be given out via a lottery.

"It is the same as we do at any of our town-owned marinas," said Garvey, who also said that the town preserved the 29-acre marina so that it wouldn't be developed with more slips.

Garvey also assured that the town has no plans of their own to expand the marina in anyway and if the town decides to change anything with the property, the community will be consulted.
