A new East Hampton substance-abuse facility has filed a lawsuit against the Town of East Hampton, claiming that the town's building inspector flip-flopped on a permitting decision after its competitor in Westhampton Beach complained.

Safe Harbor Retreat, which operates a private pay comprehensive residential facility called The Dunes, the first of its kind on the East Coast, initially received the green-light from town building inspector Thomas Preiato, who said in letters to founder and CEO Joe McKinsey in 2010 and 2011 that no special permit was needed to operate at 26 Bull Run in East Hampton.

But 19 months later, the building inspector changed his opinion "after further review" and subsequently issued a notice of violation.

RIVERHEAD

After hearing a plan early last month to this summer, a majority of Riverhead Town Board members seem to be on board with granting Vail-Leavitt Music Hall a special events permit for the event despite the fact that it doesn’t have insurance lined up yet. Granting the permit would be conditional upon receiving insurance before the June concert.

Ali said he is trying to sell the business, which is listed at $695,000 with equipment included, because he and his wife, Journey, want to relocate to St. George, Utah, a place they’ve visited often and fell in love with.

The Villages of Westhampton Beach and Quogue have filed motions to dismiss a discrimination lawsuit that was filed against them in Jan. 2010 by the East End Eruv Association.
