East End Report: Tall Ships Draw 50k Visitors to Greenport

Happenings across the East End during the week of May 28.

It's official: Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming, D-Noyac, has confirmed that she will toss her hat into the ring and run for State Senate this fall against long-time incumbent Kenneth P. LaValle, who plans to fight to retain his seat.

LaValle, R,C-Port Jefferson, represents District 1 in the New York State Senate, an area that encompasses the five East End towns and the eastern portion of Brookhaven Town.

What a difference a few weeks make.

's heavily eroded entrance looks a whole lot better than it did just a few weeks ago. However, village officials have still closed the beach to swimmers, opened the summer season Memorial Day weekend with lifeguards at , instead of at Georgica, due to the erosion on the shoreline.

Of course, that didn't keep away sunbathers who prefer Georgica. Aeriel photos show they still dotted the shoreline this holiday weekend.

Cops: Suspect Shot in Alleged Burglary Got in Through Open Window

An intruder shot by a Suffolk County corrections officer who found him in his Riverhead home during an alleged burglary last weekend is believed to have entered the house through an open window.

The burglary suspect is still recovering at Stony Brook University Medical Center after complications from internal injuries that required surgery, police say.

From the opening 10 a.m. ceremony onward, crowds flowed into downtown Greenport via train, boat and automobile for the Tall Ships festival last Saturday.

The festival coincided with the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 this year.  officials say they believe an armada of historic replica  attracted well over the expected 50,000 visitors to the village this past Memorial Day Weekend.

Hampton Bays' Lost Lighthouse To Be Marked In History

Surely some summer sightseer driving down Lighthouse Road has questioned where the actual lighthouse is, only to be disappointed seeing we have only a spindly steel foghorn tower to speak of.  But soon everyone will know that up until 1948, Hampton Bays boasted a lighthouse that was the tenth tallest in the world.

Last Tuesday, the Southampton Town Board approved the placing of a $1,200 historic marker at the site of the fallen lighthouse that stood for 90 years, steering ships clear of danger and sparing seamen their demise in Davey Jones’ locker.
