East End Hospitals, Aetna Pen New Contract

Aetna policyholders remain in network.

The three East End Health Alliance Hospitals and insurance provider Aetna have  entered into a new contract that will keep Aetna policyholders in-network at the health-care facilities through the end of 2014.

The two-year agreement was signed last week but is retroactive to Jan. 1.  East End Health Alliance spokesman Paul Connor, who is also the president of member hospital Eastern Long Island in Greenport, said that the parties were under a contract extension, so Aetna policyholder were never out-of-network between contracts.

The contract agreement also ensures that doctors who are affiliated with the Alliance hospitals also stay in network.

Connor said Aetna is the third largest commercial medical insurance carrier on the East End, behind Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare.

He cannot discuss the financial aspects of the Aetna contract and how it compared to contracts with the number 1 and number 2 carriers, but he can say the East End Health Alliance is satisfied with the contract it has signed, he said.

The East End Health Alliance is composed of Eastern Long Island Hospital, Southampton Hospital in Southampton Village, and Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.
