DEC: Biotoxins Found; Shellfishing Closed in Southampton and Riverhead

The DEC says it has found marine biotoxins in area shellfish.

The Department of Environmental Conservation has closed shellfishing in Southampton and Riverhead on Tuesday after it has detected a marine biotoxin.

It will be closed until further notice.

According to the DEC, some 3,000 acres in Southampton are affected, including all underwater lands in the Shinnecock Bay west of the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays and to the western side of the Post Lane Bridge in Quogue.

In Riverhead, some 30 acres are being closed, including underwater lands in Meetinghouse Creek.

The DEC says it took action to close off shellfishing after samples taken from Weesuck, Penniman Creek and Meetinghouse Creek all tested positive for Saxitoxin.

This is not the first shell-fishing closure this season. On April 3, the DEC closed 92 acres in the Mattituck Inlet and Mattituck Creek.
