Crimes Nearby: Man Allegedly Choked Girlfriend With Towel

EAST HAMPTON

• Jorge G. Castillo, 29, was arrested two days after allegedly choking his girlfriend with a towel during an argument at his house on Newtown Lane in East Hampton Village, said.  The woman was able to get away and filed charges on Feb. 6 after she retreated to a friend's house. Castillo was initially charged with second-degree harassment, a violation, but police said he would be additionally charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, a misdemeanor. Lisa R. Rana arraigned Castillo and released him on $300 bail. An order of protection was issued for the victim and police logged that they checked his home and car for any knives that were not work related.

• Pedro R. Santos, 22, of East Hampton, was arrested on a misdemeanor aggravated driving while intoxicated charge and driving without a license in Eas Hampton Village on Thursday night. Police said Santos was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer erratically on Newtown Lane and North Main Street at about 11 p.m. When he failed to signal as he turned into the parking lot, police pulled him over. In addition to DWI, he was also charged with felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and seven violations, including consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

NORTH FORK

• Michael Massaro, 29, of Ronkonkoma, was charged with second-degree assault, driving while impaired by drugs, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, and second-degree obstruction of governmental administration on Feb. 14 at 4:17 p.m., after a Southold Town Police officer stopped him for driving a 2006 Toyota with no front license plate and an expired inspection sticker on Sound Avenue in Mattituck, police said.
While conducting the interview at the stop, officer Daniel Mackey noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Massaro to exit the vehicle, but Massaro refused to do so and began to roll up the window and drive away, police said. Officer Mackey then reached into the vehicle to try and pull the key from the ignition, and his arm became caught in the window, causing minor injuries, police said.
Massaro was eventually removed from the car and resisted arrest but was subdued with the assistance of several officers, some of which were off-duty at the scene, police said. Massaro was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was held pending arraignment.

• Susan Langenfass, 47, of Cutchogue, was charged with driving while intoxicated on Feb. 9 at 2:26 a.m. after police stopped her for failing to maintain her lane while driving east on Route 25 in Cutchogue with a flat tire and other recent damage to her vehicle, police said. After investigation, Langenfass was found to be intoxicated, was arrested and transported to police headquarters where she was processed and held pending arraignment, police said.

• Marco Amay, 19, of East Hampton, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, unlawful possession of marijuana, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle on Feb. 11 at 1:48 a.m., after police stopped him for failing to maintain his lane on Route 25 in Cutchogue, police said. The officer smelled marijuana on Amay and found marijuana in the vehicle, police said. Amay was arrested and transported to police headquarters in Peconic where he was held pending arraignment.

• Cornelius Whalen, 66, of Mattituck, was charged with driving while intoxicated on Feb. 14 at 12:46 a.m., after police stopped him for a traffic violation on Wickham Avenue in Mattituck, police said. He was found to be intoxicated, arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was processed and held pending arraignment.

SOUTHAMPTON

• Joel I. Kaye, 55, of Valley Stream, was arrested Feb. 13 at 8:23 p.m. and charged with driving while impaired by drugs, reckless driving and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, all misdemeanors. Police said Kaye ran a stop sign while driving a 2011 Ford Fusion through the Main Street and Madison Street intersection, then failed to stay to the right. Kaye failed several sobriety tests and had two oxycodone pills, three diazepam pills, nine acetaminophen pills, nine roxicet pills, nine carisoprodal pills, three sumatriptan pills, three morphine pills and 18 nitroglycerin pills in four expired prescription bottles.

RIVERHEAD

• Luz Gutierrez, 32, of Riverhead, was arrested on petty larceny charges on Jan. 11. Police reports state that Gutierrez removed children's toys, food, beverages, kitchen ware, and clothes from without paying for them. He was transported to police headquarters, processed, released on $200 bail and given a desk appearance ticket.

• Benjamin Gilliam, 50, of Riverhead, was arrested on Feb. 8 on petty larceny charges. According to police reports, Gilliam stole $298 in groceries from on Route 58. Reports state that Gilliam was caught by store security cameras concealing merchandise. He was placed under arrest on a civilian complaint, transported to police headquarters, processed, and held for arraignment.

• Police charged Jeremy Rosendahl, 32, of East Quogue, with criminal drug possession in the seventh degree on Feb. 8 after pulling him over in Riverside. Police say Rosendahl had a needle in plain view and admitted to having heroin hidden in his shoe. Police also charged Rosendahl with having a suspended registration and for having an uninsured car.
