County Responds to Meschutt Beach Noise Complaint

Suffolk officials say a sound wall is helping to mitigate the noise.

While neighbors of in Hampton Bays say that they have called the Suffolk County Parks Department summer spot, the county said its records indicate that only one person lodged a complaint this summer.

"We only got one complaint," said Emily Lori, a spokeswoman for the department. "And that person just objected to the music in general, not the noise or traffic."

She said the resident also mentioned that there are a number of cars at the Meschutt Beach Hut during the week and specifically referenced a large number of motorcycles.

"But our response is that having cars and motorcycles is a legal use," she said, adding, "We want to encourage people to use our beaches."

As to the noise, Lori said that last year the Beach Hut, which is a contracted concessionaire, put up a sound wall at their own expense.

"We think that has helped a lot," said Lori, noting that the concession hosts live music four to five nights a week, which is the same as it did last year.

Seventeen-year resident Mary Ann Remigio, however, disagrees with the county's statement, saying that she has logged numerous complaints and believes that not all the bands featured at the beach hut are setting up behind the sound wall.

"The music is so loud, I hear it a block away," she told Patch last week. "The place is a zoo every night, completely packed with people drinking and dancing till 9:30 and 10 p.m."

Forty-five-year resident Jim Dubrowsky — who says he has been fighting the county on the noise issue at Meschutt for years — said he has, in the past, submitted a petition with 20 names on it to the county, asking that something be done about the noise.

Commenting on an article published last week about Meschutt Beach, Patch readers said that since the county took Meschutt Beach over there have been multiple problems.

User said, "The sand is not sand but a dirt that stains your clothes. We live very close to Meschutt and have to listen to DREAM until 4:30am in the morning. We call the police and are told they need 3 complaints a night."

said, "This year, Meschutt Beach completed its transformation from a nice Family Beach to a Bar & Night Club that happens to have a beach attached to it! In the past, we would spend a majority of our summer afternoons at Meschutt Beach, this year we attempted to enjoy the beach only twice and ended up not staying."

added, "You are right Mr. Schneider. This was always a family beach, which our family enjoyed over the years. It had a small concession stand where the kids could get ice cream and snacks. We enjoyed a beautiful clean beach and clean sand, we have lost our family beach to a bar and night club scene."

said, "Welcome to Harlem Bays! Home of the Emerald Highway were drunks, drug addicts and the Town of Southampton dumps all of their garbage! It will NEVER change here! I was born here an it makes me sick that our business corridor is in shambles with that ridiculous green line down the center of Montauk (aka Emerald Highway to out of Towners!) Highway. Hampton Bays needs to separate from the Town of Southampton once and for all. Then and only then will you see a change for the better."

And wrote, "When I was young it was Calluchi`s beach and it was a town beach for families. Southampton let it go back to the county and they are making money on it so this is what has happened. Alcohol and swimming do not mix as statistics show and they are lucky no one has drowned yet. The beach has been made to slope too much and is NOT beach sand but we know they are only interested in the bar."
