Copper Swiped from Canoe Place Inn; Developers to Submit Site Plan

Developers to move their plan forward by the end of October.

Owners of the property in Hampton Bays have reported that structure's copper roof has been stolen.

According to developers , a portion of the roof, which contains copper was swiped sometime last week.

Workers have already been to the site to fix the gaping hole in the roof with tar.

And while the building has sat untouched for sometime now with lawsuits and community outcry stymieing its restoration, the Rechlers say they are ready to move forward.  They say they are putting the final touches on their site plan application, which they are set to submit to the town at the end of the month.

Their plan is the same as one presented at a community meeting in April.  It calls for the restoration of Canoe Place, which sits on 5.8 acres, as well as a residential planned development district on the 7.2 acres of canal properties the Rechlers own.

The residential development will result in the construction of 40 town homes, not condos; 20 boat slips; a recreational facility; and pool.

The entire proposal is being treated as one , with a “swap” of development rights allowing for seven additional units – meaning 40, rather than 33 units on the canal properties offset by the community benefits.
