Archived Report: Basking Shark Washes up On LI Shore

In 2009, a large basking shark washed up on the shores of a Babylon beach.

With at least one expert identifying the sharks that have been for two days as harmless basking sharks, we're reminded that it's not the first time these plankton eaters have made waves on Long Island.

In 2009, major media networks flooded Long Island when a basking shark beached itself on Gilgo Beach in Babylon and died in the sand.
