Two days after Sandy hit, the Village of Westhampton Beach granted Dune Road access to Westhampton-Hampton Bays Patch. It was a somber trip as many bayside homes, especially in the area of Pond Point, were flooded with bay waters still prevalent on many of the streets — one home's roof had lifted up.

The storm surge from Hurricane Sandy destroyed many dunes on the South Fork — and in some cases ocean water reached all the way to the bay.

Seven-foot high sand bags and geotubes could not stop Hurricane Sandy's wrath as she battered the shoreline of Quogue. The Quogue Village and nearby neighbors, who installed the geotubes after a storm in 2010 to the dismay of Southampton Village Trustees, found that Sandy exposed all of the preventative measures — the sand bags and geotubes, once covered by sand, stood bare. The Quogue Beach has since been shored up.

7. FEMA Delivers Gas to Hampton Bays

For Southampton Town residents who have been driving around on fumes the past few days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency brought relief Monday, with the aid of a Hampton Bays gas station.

FEMA delivered nearly 8,000 gallons of regular unleaded gasoline to Canoe Place Fuel Mart on Nov. 5, and the proprietors of the gas station agreed to provide the staff and facility to distribute the fuel.

8. DEC: Cupsogue Breach Filled In

On Nov. 27, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported that a 1,500-foot breach caused by Hurricane Sandy atCupsogue Beach has been filled in.

A project to transport nearly a quarter of a million cubic yards of sand to the Hampton Bays shoreline started on Nov. 30, replenishing the beaches west of the Shinnecock Inlet and around Tiana Bay after they were heavily damaged in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, as well as last year's Tropical Storm Irene.

10. Village Looks To Rebuild Marina After Sandy

Two weeks after Hurricane Sandy swept over the area, tossing at least three boats from the water at the Westhampton Beach destroying walkways, bulkheads and flooding the main building, the village began the arduous task of assessing the damage and creating a remediation plan.

11. Town Trustees Tour Sandy Damage At Red Creek

On Nov. 19, two Southampton Town Trustees along with Marty Shea, chief environmental analyst for the town, and Robert Young, a coastal geologist, toured the Peconic Bay beachfront along Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays. Walking along the beach, it was clear that Hurricane Sandy had taken her toll — cliffs sat crumbled, bluffs and bulkheads desecrated and at least two summer houses were destroyed.
