1,500 Still Without Power in Westhampton Beach

Southampton Town implements procedures for powering flood damaged homes.

As of Friday morning, the number of Long Island Power Authority customers without electricity in the entire Westhampton-Hampton Bays area has been reduced to 1,899 according to LIPA's website.

The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy was exacerbated this week when a nor'easter that brought snow and high winds hit the region, but Southampton was largely spared from further power outages.

The area with the highest concentration of outages is Westhampton Beach with 1,500 outages that increased to the Main Street business district when a tractor-trailer took out a power line on the roadway Thursday evening.

LIPA reports that East Quogue still has 120 outages; Quogue 84; Remsenburg/Speonk 45; Hampton Bays 56; Westhampton 5; and Southampton 52.

On Thursday, Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), said LIPA was focusing its efforts on Hampton Bays, East Quogue, Tiana, and Quogue.

And out-of-state workers have been on Dune Road for the last several days working to restore power.

Some homes, where electrical panels, meters, outlets and other equipment was underwater due to storm surge, cannot be repowered until an inspection is completed and approval is given, to ensure that turning the electricity back on will not result in fire or other hazards.

There are three different ways homeowners can have their home certified, according to Southampton Town:

  1. Have a Suffolk County licensed electrical contractor inspect your property and fill out a Post Hurricane Sandy Electrical Survey.
  2. Schedule a request for a Post Hurricane Sandy Electrical Survey from the Town of Southampton by calling (631) 702-1830.
  3. Hire an approved electrical inspection agency to perform the inspection.

The electrical survey must be completed and notarized by both the property owner and electrician, then returned to the town's chief building inspector at Town Hall, who will forward it to LIPA. Call 631-702-1820 for more information.
