Westhampton Beach Property Owner Looks For Support for New Supermarket

Andrew Mendelson calls for a public meeting.

Westhampton Beach resident and developer Andrew Mendelson stood at last week's village board meeting to propose a new supermarket on property he owns on Old Riverhead Road and called for a public meeting.

For months Mendelson said he has been working behind the scenes with village officials, however, he said, response to his plan has not been positive.

"They believe it is not consistent with the master plan, but I believe it is," he said.

Mendelson has proposed a community meeting be held so residents can decide.

"I'd like to present the concept and findings and then hear their comments together," said Mendelson, who said that another supermarket in the community adds just another resource for the community to shop.

The idea of a supermarket was brought up at a previous village board meeting. At the time, Mayor Conrad Teller said he was not interested in having another supermarket in the community, but said that if the public wants one, he would consider the idea.

What do you think? Does Westhampton Beach need another supermarket? Respond in the comments or in the poll below.

Mr. Mendelson: Have you had a feasibility study completed for your property to evaluate if it would even support a major supermarket? You may be wasting time and a lot of money if the site would not support such a retail offering! My consultant group specializes in supermarket feasibility studies, and has completed countless studies throughout Long Island in the last 25 years. Check out our website at: mpcaseyassociates.com Good luck!

I am very much for it-anything really well done would be a nice addition and I could stop shopping at Waldbaums which is a disaster in my opinion. I wish we had a Trader Joe's or something like that.

Stephanie Lander said via twitter: They should being a @traderjoes or @WholeFoods to #WesthamptonBeach. Shut down Waldbaums for good. Yuck!!

No , and what for??? Waldbaums has served the community just fine since i've lived here for over 16 years now. Most people near the surrounding communities feel the same. It's a waste of taxpayers monies to bring in additional rent for a store not getting enough consumer traffic anyway! Mary Anne DiMilia

How can we have an opinion without all the information? What is the overall vision for our community? What does the proposed plan look like? Does it fit in with the landscape/area? What kind of supermarket is it? What is it offering that is different, better or new to the area? More info please.

We don't need a new supermarket - we need a BETTER supermarket!!!!! Get rid of Waldbaum's and bring in a company that cares . . . and keep retail in the downtown area where it belongs. We do NOT want to become Riverhead.

I would like to see a Trader Joes or Whole foods in the area.... WHB waldbaums is a disater and small and old. We need a supermarket that will cater to the community with allergies and especially Celiac disease!!!! We need more wheat and gluton free products! 1 out of every 120 people have celiac disease!

I would like to know what supermarket is being considered. Perhaps Waldbaums could close in Westhampton Beach and this new one could be a bigger, cleaner and better Waldbaums or King Kullen, with a high end meat and produce departments. bas

Didn't we learn anything from what happened to Riverhead when their grocery stores moved out to 58? Main Street died. The Main Street merchants should be up in arms about a grocery store appearing on Riverhead Road.~~ David Emelita did a study of the village and at that time it was ascertained that Riverhead Road should not be rezoned to turn it into Westhampton's Route 58. ~~ Westhampton Beach business dries up after Labor Day and when the Condos on Dune Rd close for winter things become even more bleak. Consequently the stores that do remain open have to charge customers an arm and a leg in order to pay their rents and salaries and keep the heat on. And those who run up the island for cheaper prices are part of the problem.
