Westhampton Beach Property Owner Looks For Support for New Supermarket

Andrew Mendelson calls for a public meeting.

Westhampton Beach resident and developer Andrew Mendelson stood at last week's village board meeting to propose a new supermarket on property he owns on Old Riverhead Road and called for a public meeting.

For months Mendelson said he has been working behind the scenes with village officials, however, he said, response to his plan has not been positive.

"They believe it is not consistent with the master plan, but I believe it is," he said.

Mendelson has proposed a community meeting be held so residents can decide.

"I'd like to present the concept and findings and then hear their comments together," said Mendelson, who said that another supermarket in the community adds just another resource for the community to shop.

The idea of a supermarket was brought up at a previous village board meeting. At the time, Mayor Conrad Teller said he was not interested in having another supermarket in the community, but said that if the public wants one, he would consider the idea.
