Judge: Storm-Damaged Cars in Speonk Can Stay

According to 27East report, however, no more cars can be transported to the site off Speonk-Riverhead Road.

County Supreme Court judges struck down a request last week to remove over 3,000 storm-damaged cars in Speonk, according to a report on 27East.

Southampton Town had commenced litigation against Copart Auctions the week prior, saying the car auction company – parking the cars off Speonk-Riverhead Road – could be causing an environmental hazard by storing the cars unsafely.

According to 27East, the existing cars were not ordered to be removed. However, the site reportedly cannot accept more vehicles, and those sitting there currently cannot be tampered with.

The Department of Environmental Conservation had previously ordered Copart Auctions to remove cars from a private parcel at the Enterprise Park at Calverton, stating the damaged vehicles posed a threat to the endangered tiger salamander.
