Healthy Cupcake Business Launches in the Hamptons

Hamptons Cupcake Lounge cupcakes are available at area farmer markets.

There are a number of cupcake businesses around the Hamptons from in Westhampton Beach to the  in Southampton, but Cynthia Sachs, of Westhampton, says her new cupcake business, Hamptons Cupcake Lounge, offers something a little different — healthy cupcakes with a flair.

Yes, Sachs said healthy cupcakes.

Sachs, a retired Manhattan marketing consultant, said she got the idea to start a healthy cupcake business after being diagnosed with type-2 diabetes about nine years ago.

"Healthy eating became a part of my life," she said. "And I didn't think twice about it, except when it came to sweet treats. That's when I started to create healthy cupcakes."

Sachs said she tore into old recipes and began to study the science of replacing ingredients. She said she played around with recipes, adding a little of this and that and soon enough she perfected the art of making a tasty, healthy cupcake.

"My cupcakes don't contain butter, oil or refined sugar," she said. "Instead I use unsweetened fruit purees, skim milk and all natural sweeteners."

Through experimenting at an Eastport commercial kitchen that she rents, she said she was able to create all kinds of flavored cupcakes from the popular lavender lemonade to a green tea cupcake, carrot cake to orange blossom to peppermint patty.

"Anything I like I make it into a cupcake," she said. "Even cocktails."

Sachs said she now has a total of 27 flavored cupcakes that she sells through her website, Facebook and at area farmers markets, including ones in East Hampton, Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor.

Sachs says she is looking to expand and open a storefront in Southampton in the near future and also offer cookies shaped with fondant, as well as more cupcake flavors.
