Family-Run Farm Sprouts in Hampton Bays

Sweet Woodland farm is now selling selling fresh eggs, heirloom vegetable plants and handmade wood items

A new family-run farm is growing roots in Hampton Bays.

The organic farm, called Sweet Woodland Farm, opened this summer, selling selling fresh eggs from their 12 chickens, heirloom vegetable plants from their organic garden, and handmade wood items, such as bowls that are crafted by Mike Stephens, a cabinet-maker by trade.

The new farm has been a dream of the Stephens family since they purchased their first chickens five years ago and moved to a new home in the Pine Barrens.

Starting out small, Rachel Stephens – a stay-at-home mom who homeschools her two children –  said she has big plans for the new farm.

Stephens said by next year, the family plans to sell honey, hand-spun angora yarn and hand-knit items, as well as charcoal. The family also has its sights on featuring their items at local farmer's markets.

Everything the farm offers, said Rachel, is raised or grown with nutrition and safety in mind.

"Our relationship with earth's gifts are important to us and here we proudly use them and care for them every day," she said. "We only use organic feeds and fertilizers whenever possible while steering clear of anything genetically engineered."

Rachel said that her family believes that the further "food is removed from its natural state, the way mother earth intended, the more dangerous it is on our health."
