Egg Creams: You Can Still Find Them Locally

The chocolate drink is a throwback to days gone by, but you can still enjoy it at local restaurants, like Sydney's.

If you are of a certain age, you've undoubtedly sipped on an egg cream.

Long before there were Starbucks-bottled Frappuccinos, people sat at soda shops and order fountain drinks. One such favorite is the chocolate egg cream.

Made with chocolate syrup, milk, and soda water, it's a drink for chocolate lovers who aren't quite in the mood for a chocolate shake. It's said to originate from Brooklyn.

The age group I belong to isn't the one that remembers egg creams with great nostalgia, but I do. I spent summers growing up on Shelter Island, and going to Carol's luncheonette, across from the school, was a way of life -- so were egg creams. My parents didn't let us drink soda, but egg creams were our treat.

While Carol's closed so many years ago (I don't even want to think about how long exactly), the Drug Store on Shelter Island -- which has a soda fountain for those of you not familiar -- still serves them.

When I moved permanently to the South Fork, I stopped drinking them for a while. I didn't realize they are still served, and making them at home just isn't the same as sitting on a stool at Carol's.

But, there are plenty of places serving the throwback drink. In fact, right here in Westhampton, Sydney's serves up the best egg creams I've had in a long, long time.

Do you enjoy a chocolate egg cream every once in a while? Where do you get one? Who makes the best one? Share your memories of the old fashion drink. Leave a comment below.
