Hampton Bays will soon have a Dollar Tree.

The business, which operates thousands of stores in 48 states, according to its website, is expected to move next door to Wild By Nature in the Tiana Shopping Center on Montauk Highway.

Currently, workers are preparing the storefront and the business is accepting applications for assistant managers and full and part-time staff. Those interested a sign in the window reads, can apply by visiting the dollar tree website.

The Tiana Shopping Center shopping center has seen several changes over the past few months — In September, Moe's Southwest Grill opened; Planet Fitness announced a make-over; in July, The Hallmark Store closed after being in business for 40 years and a bagel shop, previously located next to Planet Fitness, moved a few stores down.

Patch wants to know: What do you think about a Dollar Tree opening in Hampton Bays? Comment below.

Good, this will give another local dollar store some much needed competition.

I agree, more competition is needed to get prices in line out east. Gas prices next!!

I am going to open up a .75 cent store and sell 5.5 hour energy!

Little by little it will look like Shirley.

I am very sorry to hear that-it just makes it that much harder for us local small businesses to keep going. Competing with the franchise prices is impossible if we want to stay living and working here. Oh well, I am powerless I guess.

Is this store going in the space that was occupied by Center Island...or the smaller area to the left of Wild Oats?

BTW you want to know what I think of it.....another junk store created for a society that has become NOTHING but disposable.
marysartsygirl December 11, 2013 at 10:28 AM
Former Nassau County resident: here comes the tide of cheap junk chains that crept into western LI creeping out east. what's next a payless shoes?
BeachGal12 December 11, 2013 at 10:34 AM
Mary Mary...open your eyes there's a payless in Riverhead. Yes, there's lots of cheap junk that has already made it's way east...they just add a snobby address to disguise.

I am excited for this. Finally a decent dollar store! And I don't have to go to Patchogue or Shirley!!! Sorry people and I truly don't care how anyone else feels. Get over it. Its not about being a snob or staying with local businesses. Its about living within your means. If that means going to the Dollar Tree to buy basics then so be it. Some people can't affordto shop small businesses all the time.

I think Hampton Bays has come a long way in the 30 years I've been living here. It is now more convenient to get what you need without having to drive several miles to get there. I understand the controversy over getting too commercial and supporting our local businesses, however the residents of HB deserve competitive pricing and stores that we can afford to shop in.

I disagree Joan. I prefer Hampton Bays of yesteryear. This was a nice small town that has growth in many ways. If progress is pushing our neighbors out of business to save a buck....we are no longer a small caring place. If you didn't like what Hampton Bay's offered 30 years ago...what was the draw?
