CrossFit Opens Location in East Quogue

Owner Kevin McCoun says all CrossFit can be tailored to meet anyone's needs.

It didn't take long for Kevin McCoun, of Bellport, to get hooked on the Crossfit training model. After just a few sessions, he knew it was not just about working out — it was something more; he wanted to start his own Crossfit gym.

"I fell in love with it," said McCoun, who after training for a year at Crossfit, got his certification and opened a Crossfit location in East Quogue.

Not even the downswing of the economy swayed McCoun.

"If I didn't open it, ten years down the road, I'd be thinking, 'what if.'" I had to give it a go to see what happens."

The gym has been open since June and McCoun, who worked summers in Quogue for a pool company, says there has been a lot of interest.

"We got a lot of drop-ins over the summer, but now we are starting to get more permanent members," said McCoun.

Located at 2 Quogue Plaza Tr., CrossFit, says Mcoun, offers a work-out unlike others — some workouts a filled with non-stop movement for 20 minutes.

"It's a strength and conditioning program," said McCoun. "It mixes gymnastics and Olympic weightlifting and focuses on endurance and cardio."

The program, he said aims to promote overall fitness that boost athleticism by increasing endurance, stamina, strength power, speed, balance, agility and accuracy.

MCcoun says that the program is not for everyone, but the work-outs can be tailored to individual needs.

"It doesn't matter your age or background," said McCoun. "All workouts are scalable depending on their goals."

McCoun suggests that those that are interested try out the program at an hour-long, drop-in class, which are offered for free to those that what to take an introductory session.  Regular training sessions range from $20 for a drop-in class to unlimited packages for $150. Discounts are available for the military, law enforcement, firefighters, teachers and students.

"We are becoming a community here," said McCoun. "People come here not only to work out but to build on friendships. We are like a family."
