Cars wrapped around gas stations well into Thursday night with motorists — some waiting as long as two hours — hoping the tanks wouldn't empty out by the time they got to the pump.
But, as of Friday morning, some stations started to get shipments of fuel.
Around 3 a.m. the Hess station in Quogue received a shipment and was down to just 252 gallons of regular and 156 gallons of premium as of 9 a.m., according to HessExpress.com.
The website has posted an inventory list on its website, including many, but not all, Hess gas stations in the area. Hess advises only heading to a station that reports having at least 5,000 gallons left. Any less, and it will probably be used up by vehicles already waiting on-line.
The Southampton Hess reports having 7,817 gallons of regular left, and 889 gallons of premium. It is out of 89 octane unleaded, and diesel.
At 8:30 a.m. Friday, more than 40 vehicles lined up for fuel at Spirit in East Quogue, including a utility truck in the area for line repairs, and the line was only getting longer.
Hess in Hampton Bays and Empire in East Quogue were all out of unleaded fuel, and had only diesel left.
With the shortage of gas, Suffolk County has ordered gas station owners to limit customers to fill up just one tank of gas per visit and for those customers without power, up to an additional 10 gallons of gas per visit until further notice.
In a statement to the media, the county said that the state and federal government are working to restore infrastructure so that gas supplies can return to normal, but is advising residents that through the weekend, they should stay home or remain local.
