Tails from a Volunteer: Volunteering Is Seeing Everyone’s Hard Work Pay Off

Bonnie Jacobs, who has been volunteering since 2010, talks about her experiences at Bideawee.

When I became a dog owner, I expected that a new joy would come into my life. However, the bond that I formed with my new pet was beyond anything I expected. Our strong connection made me begin to think about other animals that weren’t as lucky as my new best friend, the animals that had no permanent home and needed love, exercise and attention. It was in that moment of reflection that I decided to volunteer at Bideawee and help those animals.

Luckily for me, Bideawee is a very inspiring and enjoyable place to volunteer. The hardworking staff treats the animals with kindness, care and compassion, preparing them for finding their forever family. It warms me to see the dogs get so excited to go for a walk, play in the Dog Park, or be showered with affection from staff and volunteers. Interacting with these animals has taught me that despite all odds, these animals are loving souls just waiting for a good home.

My favorite stories are about Lady and Bear. Lady is a basset hound mix that was neglected by her previous owner. Despite this early neglect, she continues to have a positive demeanor. She is sweet, calm and good natured dog. Witnessing Lady’s unconditional love for people has taught me about forgiveness and her resolve in the face of such sadness has inspired a willingness to trust again.

Bear is a year and a half year old St. Bernard mix that looks the part of an intimidating dog, but is really nothing of the sort. Before Bear arrived at Bideawee, he lived alone in a foreclosed house with sporadic visits from his owner.  As a result of spending the majority of his formative time alone, Bear missed out on much of the important socialization that puppies need. Being abandoned also made Bear wary and scared, but Bideawee’s trainers worked with him tirelessly. The trainers, adoption center staff and volunteer’s dedication helped Bear become the loveable boy everybody at Bideawee knew he was. Recently, Bear found his forever home. Now, he will get to be part of a loving family who will form the same kind of bond that once inspired me.

For me, the best part of volunteering is seeing everyone’s hard work pay off when the animals get adopted. If you share my love of animals and want make a difference in the lives of pets in need, please contact Bideawee at 866-262-8133 to become a volunteer.
