Tails from a Volunteer

Jeannie Rindfuss talks about being a Bideawee volunteer.

I have been part of the community for many years. Throughout my childhood I enjoyed the comfort and companionship of numerous special cats and dogs – all of which were adopted from the Adoption Center at Bideawee in Wantagh.  During the past 45 years, my entire family has adopted their furry family members from Bideawee. Here is a photo of myself with Pebbles, a Bideawee rescue that was the neighborhood’s favorite gentle giant. I miss Pebbles dearly, but know he is now waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge with all my other furry friends that I loved throughout my life.

Being so connected to Bideawee while I was growing up, it was natural to continue that relationship when I moved to Westhampton Beach a few years ago. Being a volunteer has been a wonderful fit for me. I started as a dog walker and later began to sign up for special events, which I love. This past weekend I even rode through Westhampton village on Bideawee’s St. Patty’s Day Parade float in full dog costume. There’s no where else you can have so much fun and help pets at the same time!

During my time as a volunteer, I have made some wonderful friends and met many amazing animals. Every pet at Bideawee is special, but those who wait a long time to find their forever homes can be especially touching.  When thinking of this, one particular husky, Miko, comes to mind.  Miko lived at the Adoption Center at Bideawee for many months. Miko was a beautiful dog, but continued to get passed over in favor of smaller, younger pups.  Fortunately, after many long months, this special dog finally found his forever home. It was so exciting to see him begin his new journey.

Weeks later I was in the Animal Hospital at Bideawee with my own dog and was surprised to see Miko come in with his new owner. He was in all his glory—so happy, calm and content.  I could tell this new family was a match made in heaven and my heart melted. This is just one of the wonderful, yet amazingly typical, stories you will see happen at Bideawee. I encourage anyone who loves animals to become a volunteer and see for themselves.
