One of the greatest rewards of working at Bideawee is watching the transformation of an animal struggling with behavior issues turn into a loving and kind family pet. Such is the story of Sable who waited 5 months for the perfect match.
Sable began her Bideawee journey at 4 months old when she arrived at the Adoption Center at Bideawee. When we first met her she was already packing 40 pounds of muscle on her frame and had a fearful demeanor and many stress-related behaviors. Her size and physical strength were equally matched by her determination and stubbornness, which made teaching her basic obedience more challenging than the average puppy.
“Sable was a hyperactive puppy from the beginning,” said Bideawee Matchmaker, Sophia Kokkonis. “We knew that time, patience and a commitment to working with Sable was necessary if she was going to get rid of her behavior issues. From the very beginning, we knew she was intelligent, so providing her almost constant mental stimulation was going to be a key to helping her become someone’s best friend.”

Sable was rapidly entering adolescence meaning time was running out to adequately socialize her and build her confidence so she could find her loving home. The staff at the Adoption Centers at Bideawee showered Sable with enrichment, attention and training to correct the inappropriate behaviors that she had adopted in her young life so that she could find her perfect match.
Based on more than 100 years of experience in finding animals forever homes the staff at Bideawee knows that puppies get adopted much more quickly than the adult dogs in our care. So as Sable neared her 5 month anniversary at Bideawee the entire staff shared the very real concern that Sable would continue to be overlooked as she transformed from a puppy into a loving adult dog.

Thankfully Loretta Schenkel and her family walked through the doors at the Adoption Centers at Bideawee with their Rottweiler, Roxy. From the moment Loretta saw Sable, she knew it was the perfect match. The interaction between Sable, Roxy and Loretta went seamlessly, with both dogs somehow knowing that they were destined to become housemates and lifelong friends.
When Loretta and Roxy adopted Sable it was the culmination of Sable’s journey at Bideawee and a reinforcement of the work and love that the entire staff provided Sable and all the animals at Bideawee. Loretta continues to send Bideawee email updates photos and updates and she states “They are both so happy! Everything is great. Sable warmed up very quickly and is such a sweet girl. We love her.”
Sometimes, all an animal needs is a second chance and a family to share their love.
