Finding a Home for Dizzy

An inspirational story of a 4-month-old kitten, determined to overcome her shortcomings and find the perfect forever home.

Many animals brought to Bideawee have the unfortunate circumstance of suffering from a physical ailment that may require extensive recovery.  One of the greatest rewards is being a part of that recovery and witnessing the animal’s transformation and eventually seeing them off to there new forever home.

It was only 4 months ago when Bideawee’s tale of first began to unfold.  A Good Samaritan came to the Animal Hospital at Bideawee with an injured 4-month-old kitten that was found on the side of the road.  This kitten, weighing only 3 pounds, was severely emaciated, dehydrated, and seemed to suffer from some sort of neurological disorder.  She would collapse when she attempted to stand and could not hold her head up above a bowl to eat.  Bideawee’s veterinary staff began a long series of tests, treatments, and therapy.  It was determined that Dizzy was born with this neurological disorder that affected her balance and coordination.  Despite this unfortunate news, the staff was determined to do whatever if would take to improve Dizzy’s lifestyle.

Since she was also malnourished, Dizzy was immediately placed on a strict diet, rich with vitamins, helping her grow steadily and stronger.  Each day, through perseverance, and rehabilitation, Dizzy muscles began to strengthen.  Soon, she was able to keep her head up and eat on her own.  Within a few short weeks, she began walking slowly.  Two months later, she was running and playing like any other kitten.  Her coordination and ability to jump, was still unsteady, but it never slowed her down.  If she fell when walking, she’d get right back up.  If she missed the jump, she’d simply try again.  The veterinary and adoption staff was amazed at Dizzy’s improvement.  With constant care, love and attention from Bideawee staff and volunteers, Dizzy continued to progress daily.

One month later, a lady stopped into Bideawee to donate stuffed toys for our resident animals.  Upon a tour of our facility, she met Dizzy, heard about her story and simply fell in love.  A few hours later, she returned with the rest of her family and everyone thought Dizzy was perfect.  They adopted her that day and frequently send Bideawee updates on their new family member.  Recently, the adopters reported, “This Thanksgiving we are thankful for… Dizzy!  She is doing great! The day we took her home, she took possession of the house in an hour - completely at ease and settled in.  Our son and Dizzy spend lots of time finding cozy spots to lie together.  She loves being handled and pet...and fed.  She's expressed a preference for fresh chicken and salmon… a pretty good life for a cat!”

The Bideawee staff was over-joyed that Dizzy found her perfect home.  After overcoming such suffering at only 4 months old, the story of Dizzy is inspirational.  As the holiday season approaches, it is humbling to remind ourselves that there are still happy endings and tales of triumph, even for one so small.  Thankfully for Dizzy, there has been yet another happily ever after… one that is full of love, family, and fresh fish!
