Blog: Be Careful Giving a Pet as a Holiday Gift

Bideawee's Behavior and Training Manager, Mike Rueb, says even though the thought of giving someone the love of a new pet can be enticing, think about getting something different to show your love.

During this time of year, it is common to see many people out shopping at pet stores, or looking for a gift for a loved one at an animal shelter. There is no doubt that your dog or cat would love a new ball or special treats, but be careful before giving into the cuteness of a puppy or kitten and adopting one for a family member or friend.

We know that there is a spike in adoptions during the holidays and this unfortunately creates a spike of returned animals a few months later. It's very sad to see the results of the realization that that cute furry face actually needs to be fed, walked, cared for medically and fully integrated into your life. Sometimes what gets lost in the impulse of buying or adopting a pet for a friend or family member is the long term commitment (10-18 years) that a dog or cat can bring us, as well as responsibilities such as vet bills, training, supplies, etc.. It is also a highly personal choice that is best made by the pet parent. While there are many cases where a family is ready to bring a new pet into their lives during the holidays, it is always smart to make sure they are ready for the long-term commitment that comes with welcoming a pet.

One of the single most important things to ensure a successful pet adoption is having the adopters meet the prospective new family member before adoption. It is here that the matchmaking process takes place and it's a place where Bideawee Matchmakers excel. Bideawee is fortunate that the organization has a wealth of experienced and educated Matchmakers that help prospective adopters find the best pet to fit their lifestyle. Make sure that when you begin the search for your furry forever friend you deal with adoption associates that have in-depth knowledge about the dog or cat so that you make the right choice for your life.

Even though the thought of giving someone the love of a new pet can be enticing, think about getting something different to show your love. Giving a home to a pet in need is a nice gesture for the holidays, but remember, dogs and cats need loving homes all year long.
