Doc on Bridgehampton's James Salter to Premiere

Hampton International Film Festival will host the U.S. debut Sunday of documentary on acclaimed novelist.

Bridgehampton novelist and film writer James Salter will be featured prominently at the Hampton International Film Festival this weekend.

"James Salter: A Sport and a Pastime," a film about his most famous work and his love affair with France, will have its U.S. premiere.

The 54-minute documentary centers on Salter himself and the making of his 1967 novel, titled "A Sport and A Pastime, " about an American Ivy League dropout's relationship with a French girl.

"A love letter to youth, romance, and provincial France, the novel shocked and enthralled the world with its poetic prose and frank sexuality," the filmmakers stated.

Directed by Edgar Howard, Sandy Gotham Meehan and Tom Piper, the documentary captures Salter's reflections on his life and work, along with interviews with his notable friends, including Robert Redford and Reynolds Price.

Salter, who was a fighter pilot before becoming a successful writer, was selected as the New York State Author from 1998 to 2000, chosen by the New York State Writers Institute.

"James Salter: A Sport and a Pastime" premieres Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the East Hampton United Artists movie theater. For tickets, click here.
