Neighbors Reflect On Sandy: 'It was Warmer Outside Than In'

Join our open Hurricane Sandy blog and tell us how you survived the experience

One year ago today the region was hit with one of the biggest storms in Long Island history, as Hurricane Sandy downed trees, flooded and destroyed homes and caused a major gas crisis. One of the first things to go in the area was electric and many in the community went as long as two weeks without power. The fallout from the power loss led to the resignation of LIPA’s chief operating officer Michael Hervey.

We asked folks on our Facebook pages how they dealt with the loss of power. Here are some of the responses we got:

Danielle Spezia Bryson 11 days !! survived off a generator and fire place and our great friends that helped out!

Lynn Klein Four days. Survived a week without after Gloria, wasn't the end of the world.

Carol Smith Locklin 13 days without power. Everyone around us had power, we were told we were "not a priority". It took the crew from Arizona 20 minutes to hook up our transformer. We were lucky enough to have a generator hooked up the day it snowed until the power came on, but we didn't have real food
