What is This?

Can you identify this sea creature that washed up in Hampton Bays?

Patch reader Nancy Norton Wilson snapped the above photo in Hampton Bays recently. She wants to know what kind of sea creature it is. Patch does too.

If you know what type of fish it is, comment below and in the meantime, Patch will be consulting with the Riverhead Foundation and will provide their response in the comming days. So, be sure to check back.

Fresh caviar. Yum. In case you weren't sure, experts recommend using mother of pearl caviar spoons in order to avoid tainting the taste of the caviar.

My friend who is part of the Atlantic Sturgeon project had the DEC recover this fish and they will do an autopsy. These fish are on the verge of extinction

I work for DEC, Marine Resources and can confirm that this is an Atlantic sturgeon. DEC staff did pick this particular fish up and it is at our lab where we will be able to gather valuable information from it. If you see a sturgeon on the beach please contact us at: 631-444-0462.
