UPDATE: Westhampton Beach Bridges Open

Mayor Conrad Teller says all bridges to Dune Road are open, beaches closed.

A day after Hurricane Irene hit and flooding prevented motorists from driving Dune Road, Westhampton Beach Mayor Conrad Teller said the village's bridges are now open. However, village beaches remain closed.

The mayor also stated that Westhampton Beach fared well in the storm with no major damage. Only a few residents are still without power and there are still a number of trees and wires down on roadways.

Preparations for the storm went very smoothly, said Teller, including an evacuation of low lying areas.  However, Teller said he plans to re-evaluate the village's shelter policy of sending residents to Southampton's shelter at Hampton Bays High School, which at peek took in near 150 residents.

"It doesn't make sense to send people to Hampton Bays," said Teller.

Teller says he plans to work with the American Red Cross to find another area shelter for Westhampton Beach residents such as one of the Westhampton Beach School District schools or an area hotel.
