Week in Review: Scout Saves a Life; Puppy Store Owner Found Dead

Also this week, a Shirley woman died in a crash in Southampton.

The following is a round-up of headlines posted during the week of July 22.

1. Carissa Castillo of Shirley Identified as Victim in Southampton Crash

Carissa Castillo, a 29-year-old Shirley resident and mother of two, died Thursday morning when the SUV she was behind the wheel of collided with a bus on County Road 39, according to Southampton Town police.

Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said that Castillo was in the left eastbound lane when her vehicle crossed into westbound traffic, striking a Hampton Jitney head-on.

2. Hampton Bays Boy Scout Saves Life at Jamboree

Boys being boys, fooling around, turned near fatal over the weekend as one Boy Scout at the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia began choking on a cupcake that he shoved in his mouth as a fellow scout chased him out of a tent.

Luckily, for the victim, Charlie Schneider, a Boy Scout from Hampton Bays, was at the right place at the right time.

3. Westhampton Art Studio Opens Location in Water Mill

Karen Hogan, who has owned an art studio in Westhampton for five years, said parents from further east on the South Fork would bring their children all the way to her studio because there wasn't much for kids to do closer to home.

4. Readers Sound Off: Cell Service in the Hamptons

We been hearing that cell service in the Hamptons is the worst it has ever been and  on Tuesday, we asked Patch readers if they have been having a hard time with their cell service especially when it comes to ATT&T.  Readers confirmed there is a problem. 5. Summer Gala Raises $300K for the Family Service League

The Family Service League raised nearly $300,000 at its annual Summer Gala on July 13, the organization said this week. 

Held under a tent on The Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach, the South Beach-themed gala for 500 guests was co-chaired by Linda Bohlsen and Scott J. Skorobohaty.

6. Shock Gets New Ice Cream Sculpture

As the national media continues to feature Shock's ice cream cone lawsuit, owner of Shock Elyse Richman has marked the occasion by buying a new 6-foot sculpture.

The sculpture, which she bought in Southampton, replaces the sculpture that is the center of a lawsuit and that Richman said was stolen.

7. Hampton Bays Puppy Experience Owner Found Dead In Motel

Riverhead town police have confirmed that Scott Kaphan, Hampton Bays resident and owner of the Puppy Experience in Aquebogue, was found dead in a Riverhead hotel on Saturday. 

8. Books and Books Summer Picks For Kids

Any teacher will say that keeping kids reading over the summer is a great way to keep their minds going and stay ahead. With a month still to go before school is back in session, there is still plenty of time to introduce your kids to some new, great books.
