Week in Review: Hampton Bays Parade and Dog Dies in Hot Car

Also this week, feds charged a Westhampton homeowner.

The following is a round-up of headlines posted during the week of July 29.

1. New Hospital Program Recognized by American Diabetes

The  American Diabetes Association has certified Southampton Hospital's "Living with Diabetes" program as a Recognized Diabetes Program through Aug. 7, 2017.

2. Feds: Westhampton Homeowner Charged in $100 Million Ponzi Scheme

Brothers-in-law — one of whom has a condominium in Westhampton — were charged Thursday as part of a nearly $100 million Ponzi scheme that involved funds to buy the Panoramic View Resort & Residences in Montauk, according to the US Attorney's office.

3. Fire Department Takes Next Step Toward New Firehouse

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department is taking the next step in bringing a new firehouse to fruition. 

According to the district's website, the district has been busy refining design plans and developing "a full set of construction specifications and bids will be received for the work to be done."

4. In The Shops: Rainbow Loom, This Summer's Hottest Toy

A product, called the Rainbow Loom, is one of the hottest sellers for kids this summer, according to two Westhampton Beach shopkeepers, who say the toy is flying off the shelves.

5. Photos: Community Enjoys Weekend Quidditch Tournament

For the second summer in a row,  Jeffrey Sherman, a Quogue resident, has brought Quidditch, a game made popular by the Harry Potter series to his hometown. 

6. Photos: Hampton Bays Fire Department Parade

On Wednesday night, the Hampton Bays Fire Department held its annual parade down Main Street.

Hundreds of spectators watched as fire engines rolled by, sounding their sirens.

7. Dog Dies in Hot Car

Members of local rescue organizations want to educate the public about the dangers of leaving dogs in cars on hot days — even if it's just for a short while.

A Bridgehampton couple learned that lesson the hard way last week when they returned to their car and found their beloved dog dead.

8. New Pedestrian Bridge Planned to Link Riverhead, Riverside

A new Peconic River pedestrian bridge and maritime trail are being planned on county owned land to help revitalize the Riverside area.

9. From Stationery Shop Owner to Psychic

East Quogue resident Jim Fargiano was just a regular small business owner 20 years ago — he was the proprietor of Royal Stationers on Main Street — when the spirit moved him to change careers.

10. Now Serving: The Hampton Lady

Nestled next to the Shinnecock fishing docks is a new restaurant that features panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Shinnecock Bay - it's called the Hampton Lady. The eatery officially opened in early July and serves up simple, fresh fish delights.

11. Bishop: 'Sequestration is Hurting Our Military Families'

Congressman Bishop, on Monday said he won't stand idly by and watch local military families continue to struggle. 

On Monday, he stood alongside military technician members of the 106th Air Rescue Wing in Westhampton, who are facing pay cuts due to the Federal sequestration cuts and called on Congress to exempt them.
