In August, police arrested a 54-year-old woman from Manhasset after she allegedly slapped her 19-year-old daughter — who police had arrested just moments before for hosting a booze-filled party at the family's Westhampton summer home.

In May, local shark enthusiasts and New York media outlets set their sights on Cupsogue Beach as several sharks could still be spotted off the shoreline.

Six sharks were spotted feeding in the waters of West Hampton Dunes in May, only 10 feet from the shoreline, according to police.

In June, only hours after graduating from Westhampton Beach High School, celebration turned to grim tragedy and friends were mourning East Quiogue resident Cameron Nicholls, 18, who lost his live in a car crash.

With Irene blasting up the coast, area villages, including Westhampton Dunes ordered that all residents in a flood zone must evacuate their homes.

An initial report indicated that Cameron Nicholls, 18, was killed in a DWI related accident. It was later learned that the accident did not involve DWI.

As Irene buckled down in late August, authorities said they expected that Southampton Town’s ocean roads — Dune Road and Meadow Lane — would remain closed to traffic and under mandatory evacuation orders until a day after the storm.
