Time to Shovel Out and Go for a Sleigh Ride

Local business owners report high shovel, ice melt and sleigh sales.

Now that the snow has stopped falling, it's time to shovel out and have some fun sleigh ridding and building snowmen.

Hampton Bays' shop owners are reporting that customers are venturing in to purchase much-needed shovels and ice melt.  They are also, say shop-keepers, on the hunt for the perfect sleigh.

While the majority of stores say they are nearly sold out of the snow-related goods, there are still some available.

As of 1:00 p.m. Riverhead Building Supply in Hampton Bays still had some 50 bags of ice melt left and five 24" shovels while their Southampton location still has over 200 bags of ice melt on hand, as well as two 18" shovels, seven 18" shovels with ergonomic handles, and six 18" plastic shoves.

Speonk Lumber, in Remsenburg-Speonk, is reporting that they are now sold out of shovels, but have bags of rock salt available.

And over at John's Bargain Store in Hampton Bays, there are only three shovels left, but the shop still has plenty of ice melt and four sleds.

If someone is looking for a specific sleigh, Skidmore's Sports and Styles in Hampton Bays has in stock four different styles to choose from.

"We have styles from a two-person toboggan to a disks," said Rick Martel, who said his title for the day is, "the only one who could get here to man the shop."

Martel said he has had a number of customers stop in to pick up a sleigh or two. He suspects they are off to sneak onto a local golf course to try out their new sled or perhaps try and sleigh down the hill at Red Creek.

"Spinney Road in East Quogue is another sleigh ridding spot," said Martel.  "Just look for the cars and you will find it."

Jeff Wachenfeld, an associate at Westhampton True Value Hardware, guessed that those buying sleds from him are over at the Westhampton Elementary School.

"That is where people used to go," said Wachenfeld, "not sure if they still go there or now."

Watchenfeld says Westhampton True Value Hardware still has sleighs available as well as ice melt and a few shovels.

"We will be getting more of everything in a shipment on Tuesday," he said.
