Take a Look at January Schedule for Southampton Trails Preservation Society

Start 2014 with a hike in Hampton Bays on Jan. 4.

The Southampton Trails Preservation Society released its schedule for January 2014. 

• Thurs., Jan. 2 - STPS Meeting at 7 p.m. Meet in the lower conference room of Southampton Town Hall, 116 Hampton Road. All are welcome! For further information call 631-537-5202.

• Sat., Jan. 4 - Hike to Camp Tekawitha, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the parking lot of Red Creek Park on Old Riverhead Road, Hampton Bays. Moderately-paced 4.5 mile hike. Hike to the old girl scout camp.  Leader: Jim Crawford, 631-369-2341.

Sun., Jan. 5 - Grassland to Grassland Traverse, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meet at the South Fork Natural History Society (SoFo) Museum parking lot, 377 Bridgehampton Turnpike 200 yards north of the RR tracks. Join Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt on a moderately-paced 2 mile hike from Vineyard Field to the grasslands of Poxabogue County Park. Leader: Dai Dayton, 631-745-0689.

Sat., Jan. 11 - Wolf Swamp Ramble, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the Elliston Park entrance on Millstone Brook Road in Southampton for a moderately-paced 3 mile hike with views of Big Fresh Pond. Leader: Howard Reisman, 631-283-5376.

Sun., Jan. 12 – Long Pond Greenbelt HOT Ride. BYO Horse and helmet. Must be a member of STPS/HOT to participate due to insurance requirements. It's easy to join day of ride! Call for reservations and details on meeting place/time. Leader: Leslie Lowery, 631-603-8661.

Sat., Jan. 18 - Whiskey Hill Circuit, 10 to 11 a.m. Meet on Mill Path off Lopers Path (heading east), Bridgehampton. Moderately-paced 1.7 mile hike with ocean views from top of moraine with kettlehole ponds and an enormous glacial erratic along the way. Leader: Jean Dodds, 631-599-2391.

• Sun., Jan. 19 - Laurel Valley to Camps Pond, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the kiosk located on Deerfield Road in Noyac across from Deerwood Path (North Side Hills). Moderately-paced 3.5 mile hike through wooded knolls and laurel-filled ravines. Hilly terrain.  Leaders: Ken and Sue Bieger, 631-283-5432.

• Sat. Jan. 25 - Maple Swamp Meander, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at Spinney Road, Flanders. Moderately paced4 mile hike on varied terrain. See Maple Swamp and Owl Pond. Leader: Bill Velys, 516-458-8548.

Sun., Jan. 26 – Jessups Neck Loop, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the Morton Wildlife Refuge entrance on Noyac Road, Sag Harbor. Views of Great Peconic Bay. The US Fish & Wildlife Service charges a $4.00 parking fee to support this Refuge. Moderately-paced, 4 mile hike.   Leader: Chip Dineen, 646-221-8225.
