What Do you Want to See at Good Ground Park?

A meeting is scheduled for Monday night to hear what the community has to say.

On Monday night, Hampton Bay residents will have the opportunity to voice their thoughts on a plan to improve the Good Ground Park in Hampton Bays at a meeting set for 5 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Community Center.

The meeting, according to the town, was set up in an effort to garner feedback from residents on several design concepts that have been drawn up — the town hopes that the final concept will not only improve the park, but also help bolster Main Street business.

“This site has been long been envisioned as a place for a community park, and an attraction with the potential to spur the revitalization of the downtown area,” said Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst. “We need to develop a plan that the community supports so we can begin to make meaningful investments in making this vision, a reality."

Throne-Holst said the town will use the community's ideas to "create a phased-in approach" that will allow the town to implement stages of the design as funding becomes available.

To date, the town has been unable to obtain state or county grants for the project, despite several attempts.

The town purchased the 36-acre park on August 1, 2003 for $3.8 million and in 2012, the Hampton Bays Beautification Association, using town and county grant money, as well as some of its own funds to build a 700-foot trail.

The $123,000 trail, begins at the pergola on Main Street.

In years past, the Beautification Association has put forth ideas for the park, including a dog run, a large green space, a pond and a second trail around the perimeter of the property.
