Southampton Hospital Again Named Among Most Wired

Strides in information technology and patient privacy lead hospital to coveted designation.

In the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, Southampton Hospital is named as one of the "Most Wired" health-care facilities in the country — the second year in a row that it has received the designation.

According to the hospital, Health Forum’s 2013 Most Wired Survey was conducted early this year with questions concerning information technology initiatives hospitals are taking. Among the technologies Southampton Hospital utilizes are systems that detect intrusion to protect patient privacy and secure data, and software that monitors drug interactions and allergies when medicines are prescribed.

“Healthcare information is a board-level priority and a critical part of Southampton Hospital’s strategic plan to build a healthcare system for the East End that includes the integration of physician offices, testing and treatment facilities," hospital President and CEO Robert Chaloner said in a statement. "We are continuing to create a paperless environment that relies on digital information for all of our care records.

"The goal is to have seamless access to vital patient information and to link the entire hospital organization, including a network of 22 satellite facilities," Chaloner continued. "The advances in technology that Southampton Hospital has adopted and is in the process of acquiring will improve patient documentation, advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and rapidly restore access to data in the case of a disaster or outage.”

Rich Umbdenstock, the president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, praised Southampton Hospital and other awardees. “This year’s Most Wired organizations exemplify progress through innovation,” he said. “The hospital field can learn from these outstanding organizations ways that IT can help to improve efficiency.”
