Harry Fotopoulos, who served as the valedictorian of the Hampton Bays High School 2013 graduating class, has won a $1,000 scholarship for a plan he presented to the Hampton Bays Civici Association.

Fotopoulos' ideas to help improve the Hamlet of Hampton Bays comes in the form of an essay he wrote for the civic's annual scholarship contest.

In his essay, Fotopoulos, who will be attending Boston University in the fall, acknowledges that Hampton Bays isn't what it used to be, but he writes that that can be changed if residents step up and get their "hands dirty."

"Although challenging, the character of our town must be maintained by meeting the changing needs of our community," he wrote.

Fotopoulos then suggests the hamlet needs to work to bring in a catering hall, little theaters, a farmers market and concert halls while also expanding resources such as the area's beaches.

He envisions a walkable Main Street with flocks of people walking their dogs and riding their bikes.

"I truly believe with proper guidance and planning, we can rejuvenate our town...Now is the time to come together and as a community and bring back pride to Hampton Bays," he wrote.
