Riverhead Foundation Rescues Harbor Seal in Westhampton Beach

The seal is recovering at the foundation's Riverhead headquarters.

The Riverhead Foundation has rescued its first Harbor Seal of 2014.

On Tuesday, the foundation was called to Dune Road in Westhampton Beach where they found a yearling, male Harbor Seal in critical condition with respiratory congestion.

The Rescue Team brought the seal back to the foundation's headquarters in Riverhead and have been working to nurse him back to health.

According to the foundation, the seal is currently on an antibiotic treatment and is being closely monitored. He has made some improvements and has started to growl and move around.

The foundation has been on its toes this season already rescuing several hypothermic sea turtles and responded to the scene of two rare True's Beaked Whales that washed ashore within 24-hours of each other in Southampton Village and Bridgehampton.

The foundation asks that anyone who spots a stranded marine mammal to call the foundation's 24-hour hotline: 631-369-9829.
