Prosecution to Rest in Guldi Trial

After weeks of drama and testimony, an end to the George Guldi trial could be in sight.

Testimony continued in the George Guldi trial on Thursday, with witness Joseph Macelli taking the stand. Miceli, a detective and investigator, works for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, in the economic crimes unit in Happauge, preparing subpoenas and records.

Guldi, a former Suffolk County legislator, is appearing before Judge James F.X. Doyle at the Arthur Cromarty Courthouse in Riverside and is facing four charges including fraud, grand larceny, forgery and criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Highlights of the day included Miceli's testimony, with questioning by Assistant District Attorney Thalia Stavrides and Guldi's dramatic cross examination.

At the end of the day, Stavrides said the people's case is expected to rest after certain documents are put into evidence on Friday.

Judge Doyle told the jury that more witnesses are expected and to continue to listen carefully to evidence as it is presented.

Doyle also ruled that while it is too late in proceedings for a notice of alibi, which Guldi asked to enter, the judge said it did not mean the defense could not call witnesses to testify on the matter and present further evidence on the issue.

The judge also ruled to allow an "expert witness" to testify, despite Stavrides' objections that "it is very late" in the game to be receiving a new report.

"Our case is over," she said. "This puts us in a very bad position."

The expert is expected to talk further about the typewriter in Guldi's office; Guldi offered to have the typewriter shipped to the prosecution's expert in New Jersey for examination.

The judge he would not "going to put off the jury" for another 10 days or more so the typewriter could be shipped, but said the new expert will be called to testify.
Proceedings continue Friday at 10 a.m.
