Pet of the Week: Oreo Was Found Hopping Around a Hampton Bays Yard

Southampton Animal Shelter has loving pets for adoption, includes rabbits.

This week, the is looking to find a home for Oreo, a domesticated rabbit.

According to Donald Bambrick, the animal shelter supervisor, Oreo was found hopping around a yard in Hampton Bays.

"People often get rabbits around Easter time but sometimes grow tired of caring for them and just release them," Bambrick said. "Unfortunately, unlike their wild cousins, domesticated rabbits, are not equipped to survive on their own in the wild."

Bambrick says that it's not only cruel to release domesticated rabbits, it's also a crime that can result in up to a year in jail or $1,000 in fines.

"Rabbits make fine starter pets but require as much care as dogs or cats. Oreo had a tough start to his life, but in the right home he would make a fine pet," Bambrick said.

All animals are licensed, up to date on their vaccinations, micro-chipped and have been spayed or neutered, according to Bambrick.

Adoption fees range from $40 to $60 for a cat and from $60 to $125 for a dog.

To adopt Oreo or any of the other animals available for adoption, call the shelter at 631-728-7387 or visit them at 102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.
