Street fair enthusiasts salivating for a sausage and pepper hero or a powdered zeppole soon won’t have to head all the way to Little Italy for an old-fashioned feast. in Hampton Bays is working to organize the Feast of San Gennaro of the Hamptons to be sponsored by the
According to Simone Scotto, of the pork store, the event is set for October 1 and 2 and will include a pizza-eating contest, a carnival, scores of vendors, bands and a parade to kick off the feast.
After a year and a half of trying, Scotto said the town of Southampton has given the go-ahead.
It is anticipated that Good Ground Road will be closed from Ponquogue Avenue to Springville to accommodate the festival.
“This is going to be the start of a big event every year in Hampton Bays,” Scotto said. “There’s nothing to do in Hampton Bays in October. How many times can you go pumpkin picking?”
Funds generated by the festival will be donated toward a worthy foundation and used for mitigating the costs of future feasts," said Scotto.
Susan von Freddi, president of the Hampton Bays Beautification Association, said money is needed for permits, insurance and other costs. The association has been invited by organizers to discuss the event.
Scotto said the public is also welcome to help; planning meetings are held every Wednesday at the Parish Center at St. Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays.
“You need a lot of volunteers to get this thing going,” he said.
